Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6 (NLT)
Note from Kip…
Convenient, fast and easy, that is just the way we like it!
It’s been around for generations upon generations, but there is a plague going through churches today that must be confronted by every believer to combat it.
For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones.
Matthew 24:24 (NLT)
Let’s focus in on this cancer that is festering in congregations across the globe.
First a my definition of what Self-Serve Salvation is:
Self-Serve Salvation is the practice of creating our own gospel and plan of salvation by which we believe we can be saved; an anti-gospel crafted out of self worship.
I’ve mentioned before that it’s my position that the greatest anti-christ is self. Well here you get to see that god’s gospel in its pitiful, misdirected, miserable form.
In our opening verse Jesus makes it clear that He is the only way to salvation, but you don’t have to look very far and hear people say that Jesus is all about love; if that is true then he wouldn’t punish people for just being people would he? That would be the the Jesus of the SSS gospel.
The real Jesus is indeed loving and compassionate but he is also righteous and just. He presents a simple path to salvation, but makes it abundantly clear that that path has very narrow boundaries.
“You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.”
Matthew 7:13-14 (NLT)
What’s happening more and more today is that churches are teaching and people are adopting Self-Serve Salvation gospel in place of the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.
You determine what it is you want, then you pick out the features of your gospel to fit into your objectives. Cash it in at the Pearly Gates and you’re home free! Isn’t that how it works?
No! It doesn’t.
Narrow is the way and only through Jesus! The same Jesus that said this.
“If you love Me, you will keep My commands. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.”
John 14:15-17 (HCSB)
For those who would seek to alter the teachings of Jesus there is going to be a stark awakening when they stand before Him.
“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.”
Matthew 7:21 (NLT)
But Lord! Didn’t I teach Sunday school? Lord, aren’t you all about Love and Grace? Lord, Your sanctuary is in the chapel of the beach! Lord! Surely goodness, wealth, and prosperity will follow me all the way to heaven’s doorstep!
It may sound cute but it isn’t, it’s tragic. Because each one of these excuses will be on the lips of those practicing there Self-Serve Salvation gospel. They will be baffled because they had it all worked out. Now this, Jesus telling them to depart, you workers of iniquity. I don’t know you!
There is only one way, the Jesus Way. There is only one truth, the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In that Gospel Jesus calls us to repentances; to follow him; obey His commands; feed His sheep; and tell the world that we are His!. In His Gospel salvation is implanted in everyone who truly trusts in His self-less act of sacrifice for our sins. Taking the punishment meant for us. In His Gospel we are called to surrender self interest to serve His interest. And there in find rest, peace, joy, and hope eternal. In Him, Life!
